One of the most popular Internet phenomena floating around is Lolcats (laughing out loud cats). Lolcats, also called cat macros, are a variety of image macro featuring cats. Image macros are images found on the web with text superimposed on them to make a statement. They were first used as a way to respond on message boards instead of typing an actual response, and, like many other things on the web, became popular and have gotten out of hand.
Although the origin of Lolcats is not entirely clear they seem to have evolved from a ritual called "Caturday" where cat lovers everywhere come together on Saturdays to post pictures of their beloved cats on Internet message boards, complete with funny captions.
The largest collection of Lolcats can be found on the blog I Can Has Cheezbuger the title of which comes from the first Lolcat to be posed on the site, showing a seeming to be smiling grey cat asking, "I can has cheezburger?" Some of the more popular images include ceiling cat, who watches you masturbate as he looks down at you through a hole in the ceiling, the invisible series, where cats do everything from eat an invisible sandwich to ride an invisible bike, and a series using the format "Im in ur noun, verb-ing ur related noun," showing the cat doing whatever the caption implies.
Since the launch of the site in Jan 2007, more and more people have begun creating their own Lolcats and submitting them to be posted. New images are added every day, some funnier than others.
Lolcats are very simple to make: take a photo of a cat (whether its funny or not doesn't matter), add a caption, and post on the Internet for all to enjoy. The only rule is you must make sure your caption is not in proper English. Bad grammar, misused words, bad spelling and especially conjugation mistakes all add to the hilarity of Lolcats. If the cats were speaking correct English it just wouldn't be as funny, or funny at all. This tradition comes not only from slang developed on the Internet but also the baby talk way of speaking many cat owners use to converse with their pets.
